# Closing periods (/v2/workspace/ledger/closing-periods) Ledger is in alpha. There are no Ledger fees during alpha. Close a period when you have finished reporting on it and want to prevent later changes. Set the ledger's `closed_before` to the start of the next period. For example, this closes accounting dates before September 1, 2026: ```json { "closed_before": "2026-09-01T00:00:00Z" } ``` ## What's blocked [#whats-blocked] The ledger rejects these operations when their accounting date is before `closed_before`: * New transactions * New pending transactions * Changes to pending transactions * Transactions inside a batch ## What still works [#what-still-works] * Archiving a pending transaction, since it doesn't change a closed period. * Reversals, which are always dated now. * Retrying a request that succeeded before the close, which returns its original result. The close waits for changes already in progress to finish. Once it completes, new postings can't enter the closed period. `closed_before` can't be in the future. ## Reopen a period [#reopen-a-period] Set `closed_before` to an earlier time to reopen part of the closed period. Set it to `null` to remove the cutoff entirely.
